About the College of General Dentistry Northern
CG Dent Northern is a dynamic group of dentists and DCPs. We represent all grass roots dentists and members of the dental team. We understand what it’s like to run a practice and the importance of learning new skills. It’s our goal to build a bigger, better community of dentists from Cumbria in the west to Tyneside in the east. We share knowledge and make it easier for the whole practice team to gain access to meaningful CPD training and affordable courses. Join us for our Study Day in 2021 and help us make Northern a more interesting place to practise dentistry.
Valerie Silver, Director
I'd like to thank Andrew Greenwood for his excellent leadership of our division over the past 3 years. I hope I can do as good a job!
For those of you who don't know me, here is a short history of my dental career. I come from a dental family - Dad, aunt, brother and brother in law all qualified at Newcastle too. I qualified in 1981 with BDS hons and I've worked as a GDP in the North East for 31 years.
I passed MFGDP in 1997 and Dip Con Sed in 2003. I trained FDs for 6 years then became an FD advisor for 7 years. I was on the DVTA and I still do assessments for the workforce department of HE.NE I am a practice owner and I take an active role in managing my practice.
I hope that in the future the Northern division will continue to thrive and take an active part in driving up dental standards in our area and I look forward to meeting you, perhaps at our planned Study Day in 2021.
Originally from Wigan, I qualified at Newcastle Dental School in 2005 then completed Dental Foundation Training in Sunderland. I completed the MJDF examination in 2009 and my FGDP Diploma in Restorative Dentistry in 2017.
I work as an associate GDP and Educational Supervisor in a busy mixed practice in Sunderland city centre.
I joined the FGDP Northern board in 2014 as Secretary. Since then, I have enjoyed the opportunity to promote the FGDP in the North of England by helping to organise Study Day events and distributing FGDP awards to outgoing DFTs in the region.
When I’m not at work I spend my time running, fishing, or at the Medicals Rugby club in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
I qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 2005, and completed my vocational training in Middlesbrough and have worked in general practice since becoming a practice principal in 2010.
I have an is interest in research, restorative, cosmetic, and implant dentistry. I am currently Primary Care Dental Champion promoting research in primary care within the North East; North Tyneside Research Champion; Honorary treasure of the FGDP Northern Division; and a member of the North East Private Dentist executive committee.
I joined the FGDP Northern board in 2009 and became honorary treasurer in 2012 a post I still hold and enjoy. We aim to promote the faculty and organise courses relevant to the dental team.
Originally from Edinburgh I qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 1991.
I now work in my own practice in Sunderland, and I have been in this role for 23 years. I am a joint educational supervisor which we have done together for 11 years.
The practice is mainly NHS and we see a varied demographic. I enjoy all aspects of dentistry and I am a firm believer in being a ‘generalist’.
I have been the director and divisional representative of FGDP(UK) Northern in the past.
I am currently Chair of Sunderland LDC.
In my spare time I enjoy rock climbing and have 3 children who are now in their twenties but still keep me on my toes.

I am a general practitioner and have been involved with the faculty since I completed my MJDF in 2012. It is great to have been involved with both teaching and facilitating fantastic study events in the North East through the division's activities. Sitting on the committee also exposes you to the fantastic work the FGDP(UK) has done on a national level, and I am truly excited to continue to support CGDent as it develops and grows on the strong foundations that have been laid before it.
Since completing his BDS from Queens University Belfast in 2015 Will has worked as a dentist in North of England. He has undertaken GPT, DCT2 Maxfacs and DCT3 Dental Public Health jobs, and is currently ST2 Orthodontics at Newcastle Dental Hospital and a part-time associate general dentist.
